Claim: Republicans passed legislation that allows mentally ill people to buy guns.
On February 15, 2017, the Republican led Congress used its power under the Congressional Review Act to repeal a Obama administration regulation that required the Social Security Administration to report people receiving disability payments for certain mental illnesses to be included in the universal background check. The bill is currently awaiting Donald Trump’s signature and he is expected to sign it into law.
The only action that this legislation does is to eliminate the reporting requirements placed on the Social Security Administration. Prior laws concerning mentally ill people buying guns was not changed by this legislation. For this reason, the claim is false.
